Android Photo Apps

Android users may feel somewhat left out when it comes to the wildly popular iPhone photo app, Instagram. Embraced by many, the app allows iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users to upload photos to their social networking profiles so that they can showcase that recognizable grainy texture and vintage appearance with each individual photo.

All is not lost, however, for Android users who want to add an artistic flare to their photos. The Android Market is home to some of the best free photo apps for your mobile device.

Vignette DemoPhoto © neilandtheresa

Vignette Demo is one of the most similar apps you can get to iPhone’s Instagram app. You can try up to 84 different film and camera effects to your photos with 59 different frames. Photos come out with a retro or vintage style. Output resolution is relatively small, which makes it ideal for sharing online. A paid version of the Vignette app is also available with more effects and photo options.

Desktop Widgets vs Web Widgets

Widgets are one of the most confusing areas of Web 2.0. Not only is the term "widget" used to refer to desktop and web-based widgets, but the word "gadget" is also sometimes thrown into the mix. And, like widgets and gadgets, the differences between a web widget and a desktop widget are slim.

A web widget is a piece of code that can be used to enhance a personal web site, start page, blog or social networking profile. They are web-based, which means they can only be part of a website. You cannot put a web widget on your desktop without someone writing an application around that web widget.

If you've ever seen a YouTube video being displayed on a website other than YouTube, then you've probably seen an example of a web widget.

A desktop widget is a mini-application that accesses the Internet to provide you with information. For example, a weather widget that displays the temperature and forecast for your area might read this information from Weather.com.

Desktop widgets often require a separate application as a "holder". For example, Yahoo! Widgets require you to install the Yahoo! Widgets toolbar. This application "holds" the Yahoo! Widgets and allows them to be displayed on the desktop.

The main difference between a web widget and a desktop widget is that a web widget requires you to be on a certain website while a desktop widget can always be displayed on your computer regardless of what web page you are viewing.

Desktop widgets are best for those things that will be commonly used like a weather widget or a widget that displays local news. Anything that might be of interest throughout the day.

Web widgets have many different uses. You might put a widget on your personalized start page that displays headline news or gives you stock quotes. You might put a widget on your blog to entertain your readers. You can even decorate your social networking profile with widgets.

In essence, web widgets travel better, while desktop widgets are more stable.

A Guide to Wikis

Guide to Wikis Wikia hosts many great wikis. (Image of Wikia)

Those new to the world of wikis can find the prospect of searching for information in the Web 2.0 equivalent of reference manuals a little daunting. While the actual use of wikis is relatively simple with a straight forward interface proven to be easy to use, finding the right wiki to search can be like finding a needle in a haystack. And the list of wikis continues to grow at an increasing rate.

Most people have heard of Wikipedia, which has become one of the most used websites in the world, but the world of wiki goes far beyond Wikipedia and other websites making up the Wikimedia Foundation.

Much like the encyclopedia we would look through at a library, Wikipedia is a great source of information, but it will often fall short on the level of detail we might require. This is where individual wikis stand out.

Comparing an individual wiki to the Wikipedia is like comparing the encyclopedia entry on dogs to a reference book about dogs. The encyclopedia entry is great for a quick summary, but if we want to get details about individual dogs, or the care and feeding of dogs, or the breeding of dogs, the reference book is a much better choice.

This guide lists wikis by category, from wiki farms to reference wikis to wikis covering entertainment, travel, and other subjects. Each entry comes with example wikis and a list of wikis in that category.

A wiki farm is a host of wikis run from a single website. They usually allow single login access to multiple wikis, and often allow a global search across all hosted wikis.

Wiki farms are a great way to get involved in a wiki community and the perfect place to start for those wishing to create their own wiki.

How To Copy Widget Code

The hardest part of putting a widget on your personal website, start page, or blog is finding the widget. Once that is accomplished, the process of copying the widget to the clipboard and pasting it into your website or blog is relatively simple.

This is how to get the widget's code to the clipboard:

Book Social Networks

Most booklovers share two things in common: (1) the love of a great book and (2) sharing that book with friends. From book clubs to reading groups, social networking has always played a part in the avid reader's life. It is no surprise this love has gone digital.

Book social networks are those focused on reading and sharing books with others through book lists and reviews. Not only are these book-based social networks a great way to share good books, they are also an excellent way to find new books to read.

This list does not include book exchange websites. It is also sorted based on popularity.

Book Social Network - Goodreads

The goal of Goodreads is to find good reads, those books that leave you satisfied and/or wanting more. It is also about avoiding bad reads, which are books that aren't worth the paper they are printed on. As a booklover's social network, Goodreads allows you to build a list of books, rate and review those books, and find out what your friends are reading.

Draw Something

There’s yet another extremely popular mobile app floating around the mobile web, and once you download OMGPOP’s Draw Something app and get a game going, it’s actually quite difficult to stop.

Unlike other popular mobile games like Angry Birds or Temple Run, the new Draw Something app really taps into its users’ creative side and gives them the opportunity to play virtual Pictionary with other users.

Draw anything you can think of with the Draw Something app. And if you draw it right, you'll be drawsome.

The first thing you need to know is that this is a drawing app specifically designed for mobile devices. You can’t access this app via the web because it uses your mobile device’s touchscreen for drawing.

Here’s how it works:

Connect by Facebook or email: Once you’ve installed the app, you’ll be asked to create your Draw Something account by connecting to Facebook or email.

Find friends: You can start a game with friends on Facebook or email who are already playing Draw Something, or invite them to download the app and start playing. You can also choose random players to play against. The app will match you up with a random user.

Start drawing: You are given three words rated easy, medium and hard. The harder the word, the more coins you’ll earn. Choose a word to draw and use the color palette and your finger to draw an image that best describes the word you chose.

Guess the word: The other user must correctly guess the word using the letters given to them in order to earn full points. Users can also press “Pass” to skip their turn if a word can’t be figured out. This erases all game progress and starts the match over again.

Essentially, you and your opponent go back and forth drawing images and guessing each other’s words. When you start, you are given five “bombs” that you can use to blow up letters or to choose another set of three words for drawing.

The more points you earn, the more color pallets you’ll be able to buy. You can also use your points to buy larger sets of bombs. From the home screen, simply navigate to “Shop” to buy larger sets of bombs.

One of the greatest things about the Draw Something app is that it can be enjoyed by anyone with most major smartphone and tablet computer platforms. You’re not restricted to play with just iPhone users or just Android users.

Of course, you can’t play on a regular laptop or Blackberry device, but the fact that the developers have made it available for iOS devices and Android gives it a huge advantage simply because you’ll be able to play with more people.

Now that’s what mobile gamers love to hear. It’s free. But like many free apps, there is a full paid version, which gives you more features such as a greater selection of words, more bombs, coins and hints.

It’s hard to complain when there’s a great free version and an option to upgrade to a full version. If you’re strapped for cash to throw at Apple or Google, it’s perfectly possible to get full drawsome satisfaction from simply enjoying the free version of Draw Something.

I personally skipped downloading the free version and bought the paid app straight away for the sale price of $0.99 (regularly $1.99 from iTunes).

After my first game with a random user, I understood why this app saw over 12 million downloads and a number spot on both the App Store and Google Play (formerly known as the Android Market). It’s highly addictive, and I’d say that it does indeed live up to all of the hype.

If you like to doodle, this app is a must-have. The game is pretty convenient too, since it’s played turn-by-turn, so you can play almost whenever and where you want.

I highly recommend this app for iPad or tablet users. The screen is bigger, giving you more room to doodle and move your fingers around freely. I haven’t tried it on a smaller screen yet, but I can imagine that it must feel a lot more cramped compared to drawing on the iPad.

Although still a baby in the app world, it’s done amazingly well for being so new.

You can download the Draw Something app from Google Play or from iTunes.

How to Get Twitter Verified

Twitter VerifiedPhoto © Twitter, Inc.

When you sign up for Twitter, your account is not verified by default. To get a verified account, there are a few extra steps involved, and it can be a little tricky.

In addition to showing you what some users to to try and get Twitter verified, we’ll explore what a verified account actually is and what types of accounts should be verified.

What Is a Verified Twitter Account?

If you’ve already had some experience using Twitter, you’ve also probably noticed a blue checkmark badge next to a particular user’s name when you click through to view their Twitter profile. Lots of celebrities, big brands, corporations and public figures will have a verified Twitter account.

The blue verification badge is displayed to inform other users that the identity of the Twitter user is real and authentic.

Verified accounts help distinguish between the real identity of the account and fake accounts that have been set up by users who are not at all affiliated with the person or business.

What Kind of Accounts Get Verified?

Accounts that are expected to attract a lot of followers should be verified. People and businesses that are well-known and possibly prone to being impersonated on Twitter by others should be eligible for a verified account.

Skepticism about Twitter’s Verification Process

The blue checkmark verification program started in 2009. Back then, any user could openly apply for a verified account. Since that time, Twitter has phased out the “anyone can apply” process and now hands out verification badges on a case by case basis.

The problem we have now is that nobody really knows how Twitter accounts are actually awarded verification status. Twitter has refused to provide details on how they go about verifying the identity of the person or business of a verified account.

While most verified accounts are trustworthy, Twitter did have at least one incident where they verified the wrong account for Wendi Deng, Rupert Murdoch’s wife. Mistakes like this have definitely raised a few eyebrows around the web.

How to Get Your Twitter Account Verified: It’s Not as Simple as You Think

Now that you know a little bit about Twitter verified accounts, you should ask yourself whether or not you qualify for one. Twitter will not verify your account if you simply ask for one. Their goal is to verify as few accounts as possible, so only the biggest brands and public figures tend to get verified.

Next, you should read over Twitter’s official Help page for verified account information. This page includes most frequently asked questions on the subject, including some advice for users to help authenticate their account if they don’t qualify for a verified account.

Now, is there any action you need to take in order to let Twitter know that you need a verified account? The answer is both yes and no.

Some individuals have suggested sending a tweet or direct message to Twitter’s official @verified account expressing your need for a verified account. However, this account has only one tweet from March of 2010, so who knows whether or not the replies and messages are being read and monitored by Twitter staff.

You could also try sending an email to Twitter through their contact page, but don’t expect a blue verification badge to appear on your account the next day. Likely, Twitter receives hundreds or even thousands of emails a day.

Since Twitter closed it’s open application program for verified accounts, there is no real clear way for users to apply at the moment.

If There’s No Application Process, How Do Accounts Get Verified?

Some users have found that their Twitter accounts get verified automatically. Twitter has admitted that they proactively verify accounts according to the tweets, personality behind the account, number of followers they attract and how many other users may try to impersonate the account by setting up fake accounts.

In other words, Twitter doesn’t necessarily require you to be a big celebrity or corporation. If you have enough followers that your brand, image ore reputation could be impacted negatively by others trying to impersonate, Twitter may make the decision to verify your account without you even asking for it first.

Pinterest

When you find something you like on the web, you have a lot of options for deciding how you want to share it. You can tweet the link on Twitter, like it on Facebook, post it on LinkedIn, blog about it on Tumblr, stumble it on StumbleUpon or submit it to Reddit.

Using Pinterest is another option that you have for sharing your stuff. This new social network allows you to share your favorite things in a very unique way, by “pinning” it on your very own online pinboard.

Pinterest is a social networking website that simply acts as virtual bulletin board. When you find something online—an image, a blog post, an inspirational quote or a photo—you can pin it to your pinboard for everyone to see.

Unlike physical pinboards you hang in your office or at home, your Pinterest pinboard can be used to share content with other Pinterest users who are following you. Sharing with others is a great way to discover and recycle new content by repinning it to your own pinboard.

Pinterest makes it pretty easy for you to pin stuff to your own board. The general idea is that you should be able to click on a bookmarklet in your browser when you want to pin up something new. You are then asked to categorize and describe the image to finish pinning it.

One of the coolest things about Pinterest is that you don't have to have just one pinboard. You can create several pinboards and organize them by category.

Name your pinboard whatever you like. Post animal photos to your animal board, great quotes to your quote board or fun holiday ideas for a certain holiday that's coming up.

Pinterest is a lot like Tumblr, given that it is a microblogging platform meant for multimedia images.

When it comes to interacting with other Pinterest users, here are some of the things you can do:

Follow: Click the “Follow” button on any user’s profile to start following their pinboards. Or you can also click on a user’s profile and choose to follow specific pinboards instead, rather than all of a user’s pinboards. When you first sign-up either through Facebook or Twitter, Pinterest will automatically find users on Pinterest in your network and will automatically follow their accounts for you.

Like: When you click to view a board, you should see a small heart symbol when you roll your mouse over a piece of content that has been pinned to the board. Click this to “like” it. A list of all your likes will show up on your Pinterest profile.

Repin: If you discovered something you really like on someone else’s board, you can stick it on your own board too by pressing the “repin” button on any post.

Comment: If liking and repining isn’t enough, you can actually comment on any post on somebody’s pinboard.

You can use Pinterest anyway you like, but some people have come up with some real creative ways to track and organize the things they love.

Plan a wedding, event or holiday: Use a pinboard to keep track of cool products or decorative ideas for a special event that’s coming up.

Create a photo album: Post your own photos of your friends, family, pets or just you on one of your boards.

Make a recipe board: Find recipes online and post them to one of your boards so you never have to wonder what you should make for dinner.

Compile a Christmas or birthday wishlist: Got a list of things you want? Let your friends and family know by setting aside a board for all the cool gift ideas they can browse through.

The Pinterest iPhone App

Browsing and sharing images on Pinterest has been optimized for iPhone users who decide to download the free app. If you have a different mobile device, such as an Android smartphone, you can also use their mobile web version at m.pinterest.com.

The Pinterest iPhone app is very similar to the Tumblr app, in which users can view, like, repin and explore content posted on Pinterest directly from a mobile device. The iPhone app also allows you to snap a photo directly through the app for easy posting.

How to Sign Up

At the time of writing this review, the site is not entirely open to the public and you need to request an invite to join Pinterest. All you have to do is visit Pinterest.com and press “Request an Invite,” where you will be taken to a form where you can enter your name and email address.

You should receive an invitation to join within a day or two. Once you click the link in the email, you will be asked to connect either your Twitter or Facebook account. Pinterest will then lead you through the process of connecting with people, following people of interest to you and creating your first pinboard.

If you already love social media and microblogging sites like Twitter and Tumblr, you're probably going to really love Pinterest too.

9 Free iPhone Twitter Clients

Twitter is being transformed from a microblog and social messaging site to a platform. So what better way to get the most out of Twitter than through the most popular smartphone in the world?

There are a lot of great option if you are looking for a solid iPhone Twitter client, and you don't need to spend a lot of money for one. In fact, many of the free clients offer as many or more features than you get when you visit the Twitter website.

Here are the best free iPhone Twitter clients:

Perhaps the best free iPhone Twitter client on the market, TweetDeck is quick, has a nice and easy-to-user interface, gives you information about the number of updates right up front, and supports all of your basic Twitter functions. As an added bonus, TweetDeck also supports Twitter groups, so you can organize your tweets. Flipping between sections is easy, and the fast scroll of tweets is nice when flipping through updates.

Twinkle doesn't offer as many Twitter features as TweetDeck, but it does have the added bonus of coming with its own social network. You can also read Facebook updates from Twinkle, so it can make for a one-client-reads-all if you are mainly on Facebook and Twitter. But the main reason to use Twinkle is for the Tapalous social network, which gives you a localized Twitter-like service that lets you track messages within a certain radius of your current location.

A solid client with basic features, NatsuLion is fast and customizable. It doesn't support groups or the ability to send pictures, but it is very easy to use. You can also change the color scheme, enable and auto-refresh, tell it how many tweets to load initially and even switch to left-handed controls.

The free version of Echofon is a good, solid iPhone Twitter client. It doesn't support groups or make it easy to send pictures, but if those aren't important features for you, Echofon might be a good choice. It is faster than some of the other clients and loads up the tweets starting with where you last left off, so you can scroll up to catch up on the conversation.

While light on the Twitter features, TweetNGo lite does come with a news, sports and entertainment section. These sections will pull in tweets from their respective topics, thus allowing you to quickly find out what is going on in the world, with your favorite team, or the latest gossip in Hollywood.

This very basic Twitter client doesn't have a lot to offer and is a little clunky to use compared to some of the other clients. But it does have the ability to show nearby tweets, which is neat if you want to listen in on the conversations of those in your general area. It's just too bad that the interface makes it such a pain to use.

Intended as a quick way to fire off a message to Twitter, Twitfire doesn't let you actually read updates from your friends. However, it does support sending a photo or attaching your current location. It even has an interface for sending a website link. If you mainly just send messages, Twitfire can be a good utility, but for those that rely heavily on reading what other people have to say, Twitfire isn't the best iPhone Twitter client.

Forget what your friends have to say or sending your own thoughts out in the world. CelebTweet is all about stalking your favorite celebrities on Twitter. Not only will you get all the latest tweets from Ashton Kutcher and Perez Hilton, but you'll even be able to see who has tweeted the most that day. Unfortunately, you have to rely on CelebTweet's lists of who is a celeb and who isn't. And for some unknown reason, they left yours truly off the list.
